CLASSIFICATION

There are currently a number of regulations which set requirements for emergency luminaries and systems in Russia; the major regulations are the following:

  • GOST R IEC 60598-2-22-99, " Luminaries. Part 2-22. Particular requirements. Luminaries for emergency lighting"
  • NPB 249-97, "Luminaries. Fire Safety Requirements. Test Methods."
  • SNiP (Building Code) 23-05-95, "Natural and Artificial Lighting", Emergency Lighting Section, Clauses 7.60 through 7.68
  • PUE (Electric Installation Regulations), the 7th edition. Section 6.1, "Emergency Lighting", Clauses 6.1.21 through 6.1.29.

The first two documents establish requirements for the emergency luminary as for an electric appliance while the other two documents provide the emergency lighting classification system, specify luminary layout requirements and requirements for the mains connection, and list specified emergency lighting parameters.

In 1999, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) developed EN 1838:1999, "Lighting applications. Emergency lighting", a European standard.

Below is a summary of the documents which establish emergency lighting requirements: SNiP 23-05-95 and EN 1838.
EMERGENCY LIGHTING means lighting activated upon a failure of the working-light power supply system.
